Tourism – Meaning, Definition, Nature & Characteristics, Purpose, Components, Scope and forms

Meaning :

The tourism word derived from the Greek Latin word “tornus,” which means a circle. Travel starts at the point of a circle and ends at the same point in the same circle.
Tourism is a short temporary short term movement of people from one place to another place for any purpose such as leisure, pleasure, entertainment, sports, etc.. tourist stays at least 24 hours at the destination and not involve any earning activities and finally come back to their origin place.

Definition :

According to UNWTO, “IT contains the activities of persons traveling to and staying in areas outside their own environment for not more than one continuous year for leisure, pleasure and other purposes not related to the earning activity inside the destination.

Tourism helps in empowerment generation, foreign currency exchange, the balance of payments. Tourism contributes to the economic development of a country.
On tourism are some problems for the middle. Higher class people think about travel due to they have leisure time and leisure income. Middle-class people only when thinking than they have leisure income and time.

Nature and Characteristics of Tourism :

1. Intangible

Intangible means cannot physically be seen, handled, touch, smell, or test only feel and experience; for example, in a hotel, the guest feels the service or nobility of the hotel staff.

2 Inseparability 

tourists cannot be separated from the destination. Tourism goes to the destination to enjoy and feel the destination. Tourism products and services are produced and consumed together.

3 Perishability

Tourism is highly perishable. Tourism products or services cannot be stored. For example, 50 rooms in a hotel: 25 are booked, in a day, the remaining 25 cannot save for a new day.

4. Heterogeneity

tourism has no homogeneity. It is highly variability or heterogeneity. For example, a Vector cannot give the same service to every guest or every day.

5. The absence of ownership 

tourism has not ownership when a person purchases a car than car his own. In the case of tourism, the tourist book room for one day. He has ownership of the use of room one day, not permanently purchase.

 

Purpose of tourism :

1. Leisure

8 Business 

Business is not the purpose of tourism, but sometimes when people travel for business, they are after the conference or meeting a nearby travel destination.

Components of Tourism :

1. Attraction

3 Accommodation 

accommodation means place of stay, rest for the tourist. Accommodation is the most crucial component of tourism. At a destination, tourists need a place to eat, shop, stay overnight of a destination.

4 Amenities 

mean necessary facilities such as medical aid, foreign currency, safety, and security and communication facilities.

6. Education and research

D. Inter-regional tourism
